Welcome to my experience in academic online education at Stout. I am a full-time instructor at Evergreen Valley College (EVC), a community college in San Jose, California. I started over 18 years ago teaching Oracle Database programming courses and ending up teaching an online Introduction to Computers course (CIT10) as well as courses in Business Administration.
I wasn't always a teacher. After getting my MBA in Finance I started out in Silicon Valley in technical support for a timesharing firm where slices of a mainframe's computer time were allocated to different companies. I spent many years supporting financial software in technical support as well as teaching software classes. My journey eventually took me to Apple Computer where I worked as a programmer/project leader in the Financial Services area. After 10 years at Apple, I took my Oracle expertise into the classroom where for the first time, classes that cost thousands of dollars were being made available to public institutions for students to get Oracle certification.
During my tenure at EVC, I was part of a pilot to use the first Course Management System(CMS) at our college as well as participating in a new state-funded organization @one, that provided the first online education training to community colleges. Soon after completing this training, I inherited two sections of CIT10 offered online and I have been teaching it ever since. Over the years I have added a hybrid Introduction to Business course (BUS82) as well.
I was fortunate enough this semester to take a sabbatical and continue my online training through Stout, recommended to me by my Distance Education coordinator. I'm off and running this semester with EDU760 as well as EDU763. To say I have learned a lot would be an understatement and I have to find out what I can do in the short-term for my upcoming summer classes as well as what to accomplish in the long-term to reengineer my CIT10 and BUS82 courses.
